The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have recently been a team of change. With four new coaches in the last ten years, stability for the NFL football team has been a rare occurrence. The new coach, Lovie Smith, is bringing about a change of his own. For the first time since 1997, the Bucs are changing their field appearance with new uniforms. Warren Sapp, a former defensive lineman for the Bucs took to Twitter to announce the switch.

“New @TBBuccaneers helmet coming for 2014,” Sapp tweeted. “Wait til you see this thing.”

17 years ago, coach Tony Dungy made a change from the popular creamsicle colors, to the red and pewter pirate flag.

While not as drastic, the new black and silver helmets debuted Thursday night as part of an NFL Network special. The helmet features a more prominent red flag, with shading techniques that darkens the pewter, as well as a more intimidating shape for the eye sockets of the iconic skull. Being the only team in the NFL with chrome masks, the Bucs hope this will serve as a chance to start the upcoming season with a clean slate.

“We want everybody to know the Bucs are coming,” defensive lineman Gerald McCoy said.

The new helmets will be accompanied by a full uniform change, to be unveiled on March 5, at One Buc Place, and will be seen on the field at training camp later this season.
