On Monday, November 24, a grand jury decided not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson with any a charges after fatally shooting African American teen, Michael Brown, earlier this year. Wilson shot the 18-year-old teen six times in the chest before killing him and was then able to walk away from further indictment. This decision struck a flame in the heart of many Americans and activists alike as thousands around the world are rebelling in this action.
“We are profoundly disappointed that the killer of our child will not face the consequence of his actions,” the Brown family said in a statement released
after the announcement.
On Saturday, August 9, Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson were walking down the street when the police officer approached them in his vehicle and told them to move to the sidewalk. Brown and Wilson began arguing and soon after Wilson fired his gun. Brown and his friend fled in different directions as Wilson kept behind Brown in full pursuit. This caused Wilson to fire a total of twelve shots, multiple hitting Brown in the chest, killing him in broad daylight. Witness reports are unclear as to whether Brown had his hands in the air prior to the shooting, however, all witnesses reported that he appeared to be unarmed and “not a threat”.
After the shooting first took place, many people of Ferguson, Missouri proceeded to riot in the streets as a form of retaliation of the police. Following the jury decision, the rioting picked up again in many areas of the country, only this time much more aggressive. Many of the protests in Ferguson included arson, defacement of property, and the destruction of buildings and businesses, many of which belonging to fellow minorities. The “us vs. them” tactics had not only fueled the support for Wilson but also destroyed much of what other minorities were trying to preserve. These negatively fueled riots have been the cause of more peaceful protesting against the authorities in several countries. Many individuals have banded together to protect the businesses that are falling victim to the looters and rioters that have caused damage.
“They [the police] told us they would try to root that kind of violence out. I don’t know how much success they had,” said Dayan, owner of STL Cordless, a business in Ferguson.
Amidst all of the chaos erupting around the world, white power groups such as the Klu Klux Klan have been making appearances again in order to fuel the grudge between races. A computer hacking and activist group that identifies themselves as Anonymous have actively been working against the police to bring about justice against this matter. Shortly after the trial, the group leaked information of the KKK members’ personal information in order to “discipline” them for their apparent support of Darren Wilson.
“The Ku Klux Klan is a terrorist group. The blood of thousands of human beings are on the hands of Klansmen,” Anonymous tweeted through the compromised Klan account earlier this month. “In most of Anonymous’ member’s eyes, the KKK no longer has the right to express their racist, bigoted opinions.”
As of November 29th, Wilson has resigned from the Ferguson police department. Although he has resigned it is unlikely that the protesting will cease any time in the near future.
“It was my hope to continue in police work, but the safety of other police officers and the community are of paramount importance to me. It is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal,” said Wilson in his resignation.
