On September 6th at around 9:53 AM, Saskot Canadian Police received a 911 call about a bus being stolen. A 9 year old boy wearing only his pajamas stole an empty city bus from the garages on the 300 block 24th Street West, near downtown, and took it on a three block joyride. When a maintenance worker left the bus running to throw something away, the young boy got behind the wheel of the bus. He was seen driving while standing up because he could not reach the pedals.

During the three block journey, the boy took two rights, then came to a stop after hitting another city bus as well as a truck. Nobody was injured but the bus suffered a cracked windshield and a broken side mirror after being caught on a curb. Everyone who witnessed the incident was shaken up.

“This is a case, from what I’ve seen, where policy and procedures were very clearly violated,” states Jeff Jorgendon, the General Manager of transportation states.

Police spokes Sergeant Ryan Smith explains to CNN that “he had an opportunity to take it, and he did”.

A similar bus-stealing case has happened before at Parker Elementary concerning a 12 year old named Michael Propst who also stole a bus after the driver left the keys in the ignition. The preteen stole a bus for the second time, the day after he was in court facing charges for the first bus he stole. For the first bus Propst stole, he was charged with grand theft and damaging an electronic monitoring device worth about $2,000.

The young boy, who has not yet been identified, will not face charges do to his age and was sent home by police officers.
