Florida Woman Barely Escapes Bear Attack

Officials killed four bears after a suburban attack on a Florida woman. The woman, Terri Franer, expressed that she did not want the bears to be killed for their actions.

“We need to learn to expect them at some point,” said Terri Frana, who is a 45-year-old mother.

Terri Franer left her garage door open and saw two bears in her driveway area, and five other bears eating trash in the patio area. The bear mauled and attacked her, injuring her face, legs, and torso, requiring her to need 40 stitches. She barely escaped the attack.

“The bear got up on [its] hind legs and started to maul her, opened its jaws and put her head in the mouth and dragged her towards the woods,” Frank Frana said. “Somehow she was able to pull herself out.”

She got inside the house where her son called 911 and she was taken to the local hospital.

Black bear attacks are rare and only occur if they feel their cubs are threatened. A similar attack occurred last December to a 54-year old woman.

“One of biggest myths is play dead, don’t do that; they eat dead animals,” police officer David Shultz said.

Experts recommend standing ground, acting big, and only backing up slowly. Bear sightings have doubled in the past 5 years, and experts say this is the time of the year when bears leave their dens.
