Choral Department Exceeds Expectations

The choral department at Freedom High School has always been exceptional; but in recent years, with the help of choral director Corey Poole, it has grown to be a program that truly stands out as exceptional. Throughout the past two years that the department has been reborn, the choral students have been able to bring the program to a whole new level.

“We’ve been trying to build numbers for two show choirs and bring ‘Bach 2 Rock’ back from the dead. This year with the new numbers, we were able to bring it back and we were able to get new dresses and jerseys for the members,” Poole said.

At the dawn of this school year, the department hit the ground running with their first concert only four weeks into the 2013-2014 year. After a year of trying to bring more students into the program, the Choral program has now been able to have five different divisions this year: Bella Voice (women’s choir), Chamber (concert choir), Bach 2 Rock and Bravo Company (show choirs), and a Barbershop Quartet.

“The students really love it. A lot of them came in over the summer and practiced. During All-State this year we had five students get in. Most schools are lucky to have one or two students make it, but we had five,” Poole said.

The students in all five divisions have been striving to be the best in the district and rank highly in competitions such as MPA and get accepted into All-State. In Solo and Ensemble, Freedom High School chorus students received nine events with superior in fourteen events. Four chorus students got excellent ratings for vocal solo, and also an excellent rating in a duet. Overall, they received Superior ratings in Barbershop Quartets, Student Conducted Selection, Vocal Solos, and also Special Category.

“What we do is we have four different concerts that are mandatory and one more student-conducted one at the end of the year. This is so that students can do it if they want and figure out if they want to perform later in life. When I was young and in chorus, we had stuff that we were required to do and stuff that we could do fun. After doing all the stuff that was required, you would decide whether or not you wanted to continue on doing stuff that you didn’t need to. I remember my teacher used to tell me ‘you can take your future as far as you want’,” Poole said.
