Mitchell On The Move

Nick Mitchell is not your average student. Between juggling golf, three A.P. classes, and his personal life, it makes every day very eventful. Nick like every other high school student undergoes quite a bit of stress each week. He is currently in A.P. Chemistry, A.P. Lang, and A.P. Government, so he has a large work load.

“I took these classes for the college credits, and to boost my GPA, if I can get out of taking a class in college, then I might as well just do it now,” said Mitchell.

Along with these classes, Nick is on Freedom High School’s golf team, never missing a practice. Time management is hard for Nick, along with most students with extra-curricular activities. Nick’s practice starts at 3:30pm and goes until around 7:00pm. Along with dinner, and other miniscule things it doesn’t leave him much time for his homework.

“I normally don’t get a chance to even start my homework till around 9:00pm and sometimes I’m up until as late as 1:00am, and I get up at 6:00 am every morning. I normally just end up having to do homework in other classes, which gets me behind in those. It’s like an endless cycle,” said Mitchell.

It may seem like the obvious answer is for him to quit, but golf is just too important for Nick to just give up.

“There’s a lot of hard work but the rewards are worth the effort. This sport is very self-satisfying, and it runs in the Mitchell family. It’s a team sport where I still have control of what happens when I play since it’s not as team reliant,” said Mitchell.

Golf, is not very well supported at Freedom. Nick feels that even though Freedom’s Golf team is very good and they have won the district final for the past three years they rarely get the recognition they deserve.

“We have won districts for three years in a row, and win most of our matches, yet nobody comes to them. I hardly ever see people at our matches since people just don’t care about golf. I mean it’s not the most exciting sport, but most people just don’t even give it a chance. Sometimes we aren’t even announced at school over the intercom along with the other sports which doesn’t feel very good,” said Mitchell.

Nick’s hope for the future is to get a golf scholarship to the University of Texas and to maybe one day go pro.
