After a tough (0-14) season last year, the girls’ lacrosse team started fresh with a dominant 12-1 victory in their first home game of the season.
Senior Kiera Sims, who has played for four years, admitted she wasn’t sure what to expect going into the game.
“I didn’t really believe it at first, cause, like, I don’t know, we kind of didn’t know how the team was going to play,” Sims (12) said. “It was our first game, and we only had a couple of practices beforehand. It was pretty surprising, but it was good that it paid off.”
The team saw major changes coming into this season, including the loss of their longtime coach. While the adjustment was challenging, Sims (12) noted that the new team dynamic felt different—in a good way.
“It kind of seemed like we were starting from scratch,” Sims (12) said. “The team has a different vibe right now. It’s a fresh start.”
Junior Meera Jamro, who has played for three years, believes teamwork made a big difference in this game compared to last season.
“We really gelled together well, had a lot of good passes and scores from new people this game,” Jamro (11) said.
Many players also dedicated time to improving their skills in the offseason, preparing through extra conditioning and club lacrosse.
Now, with a statement win to open the season, the team is setting higher expectations for the games ahead.
“It shows us what we’re possible of,” Sims (12) said. “I hope that we can get a couple more wins. I think it’s setting the season off for a good start.”
For Jamro (11), the focus remains on getting better each day.
“My goals for the rest of the season are just to keep improving and hopefully win more games,” Jamro (11) said.
With a newfound confidence, the team is ready for the challenges ahead.
“The only message I have for my teammates is to keep working hard and stay positive as we face more and more teams,” Jamro (11) said.
