Something new and exciting has made its way to Freedom High School. This year is the start of Freedoms new interest group, Astronomy Club, founded by Junior Alyssa Luongo. The club’s main purpose is to introduce and enlighten students at Freedom about the universe, as well as participate in stellar events and activities such as stargazing and engage in projects at MOSI.

“My main expectation for astronomy club is to inspire high school students to really question the mysteries of the universe. It has always baffled me that we live such typical lives, so absorbed in ourselves, and our own planet, we forget to question the purpose of it all, or what’s really out there,” said Luongo, who also serves as club president.

Alyssa’s love for astronomy stemmed from a young age when she began to question all the meanings of life around her and where it all came from.

“I have always wanted to know why we are here. It is the one question neither religion nor science answers. Sure we are told maybe what led to us being here, or what we are supposed to do with our lives here, but there’s really no clear indication as to why,” said Luongo.

She has high aspirations for the club and the students involved with it. Students will look forward to sidewalk stargazing at football games and learning all about the macrocosmic aspect of life.

“I also hope to engage in as many opportunities as possible for Astro related activities,” Luongo continued,

The club welcomes anyone who wants to join. Luongo, along with officers Micki Miller and Jarod Rodriguez are eager to inspire students and teach them all they can about astronomy.

“I’m excited for astronomy club because so many teens think learning about the universe and being involved means you have to think like Einstein, but the club offers us a fun yet educational way to learn more about where we come from, “ said Miller.

If you are not familiar with anything astrological, that’s okay because Alyssa has planned “star parties” which as she stated is “a gathering of amateur astronomers to observe the night sky.

It’s only the first year of the club and already almost 30 students signed up. This is an extraordinary edition to Freedom High School, due to the school not having a club that represents Space.

Freshman Anthony Gonzalez added, “Well personally I’m excited because I’ve always had  an interest in astronomy and space I just think that it’s crazy how we live in a place that is contained in the ever expanding universe and space is just beautiful and because of its size we don’t know if we are the only things that exist”.
