Blackfish Comes Into Light

Blackfish Comes Into Light

Recently the movie Blackfish has made waves throughout the media’s eye. Directed by Gabriela Cowpethrwaite, this movie portrays the life of killer whales at SeaWorld held in captivity and the many problems that have yet to be known to the public. It allows audiences to know the truth about this popular theme park.

This moving documentary primarily features the story of Tilikum, a 12,000 pound killer whale that has had a countless number of incidents with the places he’s been housed. It also uncovers some of the hundreds of attacks on trainers that haven’t been heard of. The main one they mention the most is the story of a trainer, Dawn Brancheau that had been pulled down under water and killed by Tilikum back in 2010. It also shows the way whales have been illegally captured and taken from their parents at a young age.

Now, that the Documentary has been released, the public has gone crazy. A countless number of music groups has dropped out of performances, schools have canceled field trips and the number of visitors have gone down.

Personally, the most shocking part was when they showed how the workers were given false information about the animals. It makes me really wonder what’s going on behind gates after hours. I can remember going to SeaWorld and hearing all the lies about the “natural” floppy dorsal fin and how they apparently die at 40.  I thought the movie was extremely eye opening, and was shocked at some of the things I heard. I’m glad the public knows about it but now I’m wondering what people are going to do because of it. Is it just going to be pushed under the rug?
