Psyched About The Law Fair

On Wednesday December 11th Ms. Ameen & Mr. Leitzke held their first annual Law/Psych Fair. The fair was held on the football field and drew the attendance of many Freedom classes. There were many different stations which consisted of a FBI Detective with a Polygraph Test, FBI workers, a Criminologist, USF Psychology Department, Tampa Police Officers, Tampa canine unit, Tampa bomb squad, SWAT, Tampa fire department, Tampa Police Department & Hillsborough County Sherriff Department Bomb Disposal, The Police Academy, mounted officers on horses, an obstacle course, and Tampa Paramedics. Many Psych, Law and other students came out and enjoyed these facilities throughout the day, in between 1st and 5th period.

“A lot of the officers told [Mr. Leitzke and I] that there was students who are interested in careers. They got good contact information from them; they were talking about training, what it takes to work for the fire department, or be a paramedic, or be on SWAT. It opens up career opportunities, and lets students see how and what people do to keep us safe.” said Law Studies teacher Ms. Ameen.

What really caught student’s and teacher’s attention, aside from the obstacle course with plenty of amusing slips and falls, was the routine put on by the Tampa Police Department’s Canine Unit. Everyone at the fair stopped what they were doing and crowded around a sectioned off part of the football field as the demonstration began. A number of tasks were completed by the dogs, including an actual drug search for 10 grams of marijuana. Also, a recall was shown where a search dog was called to chase a suspect, and then called off before the dog is about to attack. This demonstrates the dog’s ability to obey orders, and also avoid a lawsuit.

“This is the first time [Mr. Leitzke and I] have done it. Hopefully it will be an annual thing and it’ll be bigger and better. Maybe Obama will come next time, fingers crossed!” said Ameen.

As the fair went on throughout the day, students came and went enjoying the many amenities and the lovely DJ-ing by Mr. Leitzke. This informational affair interested and entertained many students, and all will be hoping for another next year.
