The Florida State Fair is back, bringing with it the excitement of thrilling rides, fried food, and endless entertainment. For many students, the fair is an annual highlight, offering a chance to enjoy time with friends and experience the vibrant atmosphere. But beyond just attending, some students also participate in the fair through the school’s veterinary program, helping educate younger visitors about agriculture. Whether they’re there for fun or for learning, students have plenty to say about their experiences.
The fair is best known for its attractions, from gravity-defying rides to classic carnival games. Many students look forward to these experiences, making them a key part of their visit. “I like the Ferris wheel, especially at night,” Alyssa Currie (11) said. “And the deep-fried Oreos. They’re really good.” The combination of thrilling rides and indulgent fair food keeps students coming back year after year.
Another major draw of the fair is the variety of food options, with fried treats being a fan favorite. For some, the fair isn’t complete without a specific snack. “Corn dogs,” Jayden Camacho (11) said. “You have to have one at the fair. Have you never had a fair corn dog? You’re missing out, man.” The mix of sweet and savory options ensures that there’s something for everyone.
Beyond the rides and food, the fair’s atmosphere itself is a big reason students enjoy attending. The sights, sounds, and energy create an experience that feels unique to the fair. “Mainly fried foods,” Currie (11) said. “But, you know, get those carbs in.” The fair’s lively environment makes it a fun escape from everyday school life.
For some students, the fair isn’t just about fun—it’s also about representing their school. Freedom High’s veterinary program gives students the opportunity to volunteer and engage with visitors. “Our vet program has a section at the fair where we help teach kids about agriculture,” Currie (11) said. “We make orange juice for them and little lima bean necklaces. They enjoy it a lot.” This hands-on experience allows students to share their knowledge with younger fairgoers.
While some students see the fair as a fun learning opportunity, others question its educational value. Some believe that it helps develop important skills, while others see it as just another fair experience. “I personally don’t think it showcases student talent,” Camacho (11) said. “But it does show your ability to interact with kids and animals, which could help in a career.” Whether or not students view it as educational, it still provides a unique experience outside of the classroom.
Despite different opinions on the fair’s purpose, most students agree that it’s worth visiting—at least for a while. The combination of entertainment, food, and school involvement makes it a memorable experience. “I’d recommend it for a couple of times,” Camacho (11) said. “But then after that, you get old and decrepit like me, and it just doesn’t seem as fun.” Whether it’s a student’s first time or their last, the Florida State Fair remains a staple of the high school experience.
