Squid Game is a South Korean survival drama series that has become a global sensation. It follows financially struggling individuals who participate in a series of children’s games for a life-changing cash prize of 45.6 billion won, which is roughly equivalent to $31 million. This prize would be enough to pay off all their debts and live a luxurious lifestyle. The show is available on Netflix and is a thrilling, unpredictable ride that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
The show has drawn much attention for its portrayal of individuals competing in deadly versions of childhood games, all for a massive cash prize.
“The show stands out from others because of its uniqueness and its overload of unexpected scenes and plot twists, which are things no one would expect. This creates an intriguing element of survival games, making it unlike any other series out there,” said Bibiana Hernández (9th).
It’s been reported that Squid Game Season 2 is officially the most-watched show on Netflix, with over 152.5 million total views, making it the third most-watched season on the platform. This shows its ability to grab and maintain viewers’ attention.
“One part of the show that kept me engaged was when, at the end of the season, Player One betrayed all the other players when they voted to end the games, and he voted to keep playing,” said Braxton Donald (10th).
Player One chose to continue the deadly game to fight against the system that created Squid Game, hoping to expose its cruelty and bring the organizers to justice, even at the risk of his own life.
“The show was already so popular because of its concept of deadly children’s games, which reflects the realities of people who are financially struggling,” Hernández said (9th). “The plot was unique and really symbolized how much it sparked on social media, becoming a viral sensation on Netflix,” Donald said (10th).
Overall, the show has become a global sensation, praised for its originality and episodes that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The creative games, combined with compelling characters, contribute to the show’s massive appeal. Not to mention, the popularity of the show has brought millions of viewers around the world, captivated by its iconic scenes.
“The game ‘Red Light, Green Light’ really captured the essence of the show when Player 456, also known as Seong Gi-Hun, said ‘I’ve played these games before’ in Season 2 when he re-entered the games,” Donald said (10th).
