Why Burna Boy truly is the African Giant
November 8, 2022
Who is Burna?
By now you should know who the Afrobeats star is, as he’s truly taken the world by storm. He has quickly helped changed the world’s view on Afro music while doing it in truly remarkable style. All the while, using three different languages in his sound including his native Yoruba and Pigdin.
What makes him stand out?
The first thing that easily makes him stand out, beyond his clothes and jewelry is his confidence which has led to him proclaiming himself as “Odogwu” which can mean a strong man or warrior for non-Nigerians. His confidence also has led him to have a problem with his Coachella booking after feeling the organizers disrespected him with the size of his name on the promotions.
His recent success
The past couple of years has saw Burna really take off in terms of music success. With him winning a Grammy in 2021, after receiving nominations in 2019 and 2020. His fourth album “African Giant” was released in 2019 and won Album of the year at the 2019 All Africa music Awards. His recent and sixth studio album, “Love, Damini” and became the highest debut of an African album on Billboard, Netherlands, the UK, and France in history.
The type of music he makes
Burna’s music mainly consists of Afrobeats, which he prefers to call “Afro-Fusion”, and recently has used some pop music. His biggest influence in the music he makes is the late legendary activist and Nigerian artist, Fela Kuti. Which is cool considering the fact that his maternal grandfather once managed Fela Kuti.
His impact will be great for the future generation of us and he has expressed he doesn’t care about the numbers of his music, saying “ I don’t have a high regard for numbers, because numbers have no feelings, they have no soul, whereas I do, as stated by GQ during his interview with them
