Do Violent Video Games Make People More Violent in Real Life?

Hannah Rodriguez, Staff Writer

Video games have been popular since the 70’s, and with the rise of technology, they’ve only gotten
more popular. Increasingly different genres of video games are released all the time, this includes video
games with violence. Whether it’s shooting games like Call of Duty, open world games like Grand Theft
Auto, or even games with minor violence such as Minecraft, many games now have some sort of
violence. But does this make people more violent in real life?

I don’t think that violent video games make people more violent in real life. People play these games in
the comfort of their own home, and for the most part, it stays there. There is no evidence that proves
video games directly cause violence. If anything, these games could be used as an outlet instead of
getting violent in real life, you can hash it out through a video game, free of consequences.

That being said, I can understand why people might think violent video games could cause people to be
more violent, and with the rise of this genre there have been more related violent crimes. However, I
don’t believe violent video games are what makes people violent. Many people play Call of Duty and
Grand Theft Auto, but not all of those people are committing violent crimes on the streets or shooting
people up. People who are negatively affected by these games could have a history of violence or
mental illnesses that could cause them to be affected by these games in ways most are not.

So, do violent video games make people more violent in real life? I’d argue that they do not, for the
most part, and that video games are not the cause of violence in adolescence.
