Personal Finance Education

Personal Finance Education

Considering the fact that most students that are about to graduate are on their way
into the real world, our school board should add courses that are focused on
teaching juniors and seniors about personal finances and how to manage them.
So many seniors and graduates walk out of high school unprepared to deal with the
adult life and all the financial issues that come along with it.
That is due to lack of education when it comes to topics like personal finance and
taxes especially for students that are going to be completely on their own after high
school.
Personal finance courses provide important resources and information to students
for them to understand how to manage their money and set their priorities in the
right order.
Shane LeNoir, a senior, believes that it would be beneficial for students if Freedom
decides to put more effort into adding finance education and literacy courses.
“It doesn’t really take a professional to teach about personal finances and how to
manage it responsibly so I think that the school board should try to add a course
where teachers educate students on how to manage and balance personal finances
before moving on to adult life,” LeNoir said.
A lot of students’ only reliable source to learn about financial literacy is school.
Therefore, if the school doesn’t make any effort towards teaching those topics,
especially to juniors and seniors, many students will end up struggling financially
after high school.
Eva Tarkington, a junior, believes that schools should have more responsibility
towards educating students on personal financial management.
“I know a lot of people that ended up struggling after graduating due to lack of
knowledge on financial management and it’s concerning because schools should
also care about preparing students for adult life after graduation as much as they
care about teaching them academics,” Tarkington said.
Freedom high school should work towards providing personal financial courses to
help their students acquire their last opportunity to learn about financial literacy
before entering today’s expensive and complex life.
