Racket Recap
May 4, 2017
This past tennis season for the FHS boys team was a successful one compared to years prior. The squad finished 1st in the district and competed in the regional championships.
For Senior Jarrod Shollenberger, playing in his final high school tennis season was emotional.
“It was a great last year on the team for me,” stated Shollenberger. “We had a solid year with 9 wins and 1 loss during the regular season. We ended up falling short during regionals, but we all played well and are proud of what we’ve accomplished.”
For players who have at least one more season remaining, the main focus was on preparing for the post season and seasons to come.
“It was great to see everyone grow and become better players,” stated Junior Jared Klay. “Very proud of our team this year. Everyone fought hard and put in a lot of practice. Winning districts for the 2nd year in a row was a big accomplishment for us all.”
While team work is essential for a championship, individual skills are also key for a winning team.
“I noticed that I improved greatly during the off season,” quoted Junior Matt Koller. “I could tell that the speed I put on the ball got much faster from last season. I have to thank the gym for that.”
Finally, this past tennis season was dedicated to former players who are now in college. With the support and guidance of former players, current players learned a great deal of information and key pointers in their game.
“I dedicated this season to my former teammate Samvit Iyer,” Junior Zach Snow stated. “Playing with him for two years while I was a freshman and sophomore, was an incredible thing for me. I was able to learn his techniques. That’s what led me to the success we had this season. We were able to nearly accomplish a perfect regular season and then do well in the post season. Thanks to Samvit, I feel as if I performed well this season.”
Juniors Matt Koller, Zach Snow, and Jared Klay look forward to earning their 3rd straight district title this upcoming season. The though of a regional or state championship may also be lurking through their mind as well.
