Insurgent

The success of the movie “Divergent”, inspired by Veronica Roth, immediately gave the sequel “Insurgent” a green light for production. After a long year of anxiously waiting, the movie adaptation of Roth’s novel “Insurgent” was recently released to theaters. High hopes were set for the dystopian movie due to the amount of prominent actors taking on big roles. Some of the big names in the sequel include Ansel Elgort from ‘The Fault in Our Stars’, Miles Teller from Oscar Award winning movie ‘Whiplash’ and Octavia Spencer, widely known for her role in ‘The Help’. There was also a large budget for the movie as a result of “Divergent” which was very lucrative to the franchise.

The movie “Insurgent” picks up three days after the end of “Divergent” showing the characters’ journeys after an attempt at a utopian society comes crashing down. Main characters Tris and Four become fugitives, traveling from faction to faction in search of a temporary safe haven. The film is action packed and manifests the perfect mix of humor and romance.

“I was really looking forward to seeing Tris’ emotional struggles because I knew that Shailene Woodley would do an incredibly good job at portraying them,” said author Veronica Roth when asked to describe what she was most excited to see in the film. “She’s really captivating and holds your attention as you watch her.”

While many would agree that the movie was well made and entertaining, a majority of fans of the book were left fuming. These fans do not favor the movies for the sake of accuracy and would agree that the film was a bad book-to-movie adaptation.

“It’s impossible to make a film page to page for a book because it’s an entirely different medium and you wouldn’t want to anyways because the way you tell a story in a film is very different from the book,” said Theo James, who plays Four. “Inevitably, there is streamlining but we’re never really conscious of it because we feel like it is coherent with how we feel intimately with the way we know these characters and the story.”

Some fans even found ‘Insurgent’ to be accurate but weren’t satisfied with other components of the highly anticipated film.

“I feel like the movie was too rushed,” said sophomore Abri Weissman. “There were so many parts in the book I was looking forward to see in the movie that really let me down. They didn’t spend enough time on the important events and the characters did not seem fully developed.”
