Get your feet off the ground and wrap yourselves in your blankies. A new creepy crawlie has scuttled out of the depths of the Earth.

Scientists in China have discovered 5 new species of spider, which are named for their complex pattern of plates covering their bodies and abdomens.

These “armored” spiders (Tetrablemmidae) are found residing soil and litter, and even sometimes caves, in southern China. The cave species show typical traits of cavernous creatures, including the lack of eyes.

Professor Li Shuqiang and his team of explorers searched over two thousand caves in southern China, and the five armored spiders are only few of the thousands of new spider species discovered. Over the last ten years, the total known spider species count in China has increased from 2,300 to 4,300.
