Streaming vs Cable: Which is Better?

Kevin Le, Staff Writer

Cable has been around since 1948 and it has had a huge impact on the world. It was going strong, until streaming services started to become more and more popular. Services like Netflix and Hulu are starting to take over, and it’s a sign of the end of cable.

It was 2007 when Netflix came up with the idea to start delivering movies and TV shows to consumers directly. They originally offered DVD services, which has already gone down drastically in popularity.

“I honestly don’t watch cable anymore. I use Netflix all the time to watch my favorite movies and shows,” said Gustavo Gomez, 11.

Streaming services have the advantage of getting new movies and tv shows straight to their customers. Cable may be easily accessible for most people, but they can’t choose what’s on. They would have to wait for their favorite show to come on.

Netflix is a powerhouse in today’s industry because of its wide variety of movies and TV shows that customers can watch on the on the go, at work or in their home.

“Cable is just boring these days. I love finding new shows and binge-watching them all day with Netflix,” cheered junior Luz Hernandez.

Cable does have its advantages. For example you can get cable for free using an HDTV antenna. If you pay for cable, you can purchase bundles which come with many benefits like internet. Cable’s disadvantages may outshine its advantages. There are many occurrences where a storm can block the reception to satellites.

“I can’t even count how many times my cable cut out because of a thunder storm. It’s so aggravating when I can’t watch my shows,” exclaimed Michael Martinez.

The cost of cable varies from dirt cheap to way to expensive. The cost of streaming services also varies but most of the time it’s affordable.

“My parents used to pay for cable up until I told them about Netflix. They liked how affordable it was and how many movies and shows were available,” said Cynthia Nguyen.
