Lax Life
Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in Florida. Freedom High School has within the last couple years established a lacrosse team, for boys and girls. Although the sport is unfamiliar and exotic to some students, it has definitely found its place at school and has gained many followers. Thanks to a solid season last year, the lacrosse team is expected to gain supporters and have another successful season.
The boy’s lacrosse and girls lacrosse teams both start February 6th, opening with a Jamboree game.
The boys lacrosse team will first take on the Wharton lacrosse team, which should be an intense match up thanks to the rivalry between the schools. And after that the boys take on the Steinbrenner lacrosse team.
I asked Sophomore Aiden Carney what he expected of the upcoming season and of the first two games. “We lost some leaders from last year, but we’ve also picked up some new players and improved as a whole. I have high expectations for this season, and confidence in our whole team.”
Aiden played on the team last year as a freshman because he was told by peers on the hockey team he would do well and proved to be a valuable player.
Evan Crawford, a Senior at Freedom, says “this being my last season with Freedom lacrosse, I’m hoping to make as much happen and go as far as possible. We have a great team I know we’ll do well.”
The girls lacrosse team is also expecting a great season. February 6th the girls also open against rivals Wharton High School, and follow up with a game against the Plant lacrosse team.
Last year the girls lacrosse team had some great moments, but didn’t accomplish quite as much as they wanted. This year the girls team is expected to produce much more.
Senior Palak Patel, when asked what she’s expecting out of the season said “We are expected to do a lot better in each of our games. We’ve gotten much better, and I hope some of the underclassmen recruit many more good players so the team can continue to grow next year.”
Palak has proven to be a key player since she joined the team and a great attacker.
Hannah Finn, another Senior on the girls lacrosse team plays with her twin sister Sarah and they’re expecting a thriving season before they graduate. The duo plays a key role for the team on and off the field.
Hannah Finn said “expect us to have a great season regardless if we win or lose. As long as we work together and have fun, that’s what will make us a good team.”
Freedom lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports and without a doubt one of the most entertaining and high energy sports at the school. Come support the lacrosse teams as they are expecting amazing seasons.
