Hollering At Hotties
Men try to get women’s attention in many different ways. Some ways are very effective while others not so much. There is one dilemma though, is it really ok for men and boys to comment on women and girls on the street?
While some women take comments as compliments, others take it as a little more than that, sometimes making them feel uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe.
According to, sophomore, Sami Ben Khafed “I think it’s alright to comment on women and girls on the street, you have to get their attention somehow. I really don’t think it should offend them if I give them a compliment or something like that.”
When asking girls throughout the Freedom High School campus many replies were identical. Not many of them claim they have ever felt uncomfortable or unsafe because of a comment made while they were out walking somewhere.
When asked if it’s O.K. for men and boys to comment on women and girls on the street, junior, Emily Dabrowski commented, “Everyone has the right to feel comfortable doing something as simple as walking down the street. A friendly comment can make someone’s day but derogatory slurs can cause a person to feel unsafe in their environment and violated. It goes for women and men.”
Of course there will always be some people that make inappropriate comments. Just because of those people it makes women and girls take things the wrong way when someone is genuinely just being nice and complimenting them.
“It depends on the comment. Demeaning comments can make someone lose their dignity, which isn’t okay. Simple friendly comments can make a person’s day and I don’t think it should only be guys that are being questioned either, it should pertain to men and women,” said Rachel Diioia, Junior.
No matter what, people are going to view this subject differently. To some, people should just not say anything at all while walking somewhere or down the street. To others, it’s not that big of a deal if someone says something to them while walking by, especially if it is a genuine compliment.
