Step aside Sochi 2014! As the XXII Winter Games are quickly approaching, another set of games are gaining popularity, the Selfie Olympics.

According to the ever so accurate and informative UrbanDictionary.com, The Selfie Olympics are defined as, “An ongoing competition to take the most original and awe-inspiring selfie; often using various props, costumes, furniture, and an impressive array of poses in front of the bathroom mirror.”

Though it’s not hard to see that this trend is a derivative of the classic “mirror pic”, it is hard to tell when the quality and creativity of the picture became so serious. People all over the globe are on a mission to take the best selfie possible.  Competitors attempt to gain the most likes, favorites, and retweets by posting their photo with #SelfieOlympics. Along with the tag, this trend has also brought about new phrases such as, “a strong selfie game”. The Selfie Olympic is the first major social media trend of 2014. People participating subject themselves to any judgments of the internet, but also have potential to reach the ultimate goal of “Twitter Fame”. There is no way to really win the Selfie Olympics, but a quality entry is very much revered.

After viewing a few Selfie Olympics entries, it is not hard to see that the acts performed in these photos are physically taxing, if not downright dangerous. Some competitors are seen hanging from doors and stretching their bodies to the limits; all while they take pictures of themselves on their cellphones. This particular act has actually led to some injuries. Broken doors, bruises, and cuts have all been reported by teens climbing doors and scaling doors in pursuit of the perfect selfie. A fake story is currently circulating about a teen who died trying to take a selfie for the Selfie Olympics. None of the reports in this story are confirmed.

Selfie Olympics are most likely yet another temporary trend making headway in social media; nevertheless the creatively and bold nature of these pictures are nothing short of entertaining and astonishing. Spectators may even be questioning their own selfie game.
