The Environmental Science Club at Freedom High School has started up their recycling service again this year. The club meets at the school every week to take out the recycling that would otherwise be thrown away.

Shea Noll, 11, is new to the club this year and says she is happy she joined.

“I joined the club because I really love the environment and thought it would be cool to get to do projects helping the environment. I would definitely recommend others to join and to learn about how they can help the environment.”

Olivia Murrin, 11, is a returning member to the club and she explains the process of the recycling program.

“With our recycling system, we have dispersed recycling bins out to some of the school departments last year and what we do is split up into groups and each group is responsible for collecting the bins on a certain side of the building. Afterwards we all meet at the back of the school by the bus ramp to empty out the bins into the main recycling bin.”

Lily Scalabrin, 10, is a returning member to the club and hopes the club can expand and do more this year.

“I joined the club because I care about the environment and want to do anything I can to help sustain it. My hope for this year is that the club can do even more than recycling and can do some projects outside of school. This is a great club to join if you want to help the planet, you can get volunteer hours at the same time!”

Hannah Barrios, 12, is the club’s founder, and she explains why she started the recycling program.

“After taking Environmental Science with Mrs. Hernandez I was really inspired to try to make changes to practice sustainability. The issues happening with our environment are really, really urgent and I am passionate about addressing these issues.”
