Righting the Pirate Ship

The 2013-2014 NFL season was supposed to be the year where Josh Freeman completed his transformation into an elite quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He had thrown for 27 touchdowns and 17 interceptions last season and was looking to build upon his previous success. During this regular season, he played miserably leading the Bucs to a winless start.  On September 25th, 2013, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to bench Freeman in favor of the rookie, Mike Glennon.

This year was permeated with warning signs that the end of Freeman’s tenure as a Buc was about to end. First, the Bucs drafted Glennon in the third round. Then Freeman was not reelected captain, a position he had held for the previous three seasons. Then news of him missing the team picture was leaked. After saying that Freeman was the starting quarterback for a week, the Bucs suddenly made a change and went with Glennon.  Freeman went on national air getting interviewed by ESPN and demanded a trade. The saga continued as the Bucs fined him for the interview. ESPN then reported that Freeman was on the beginning stages of the NFL drug program. Freeman than countered saying it was because he accidently took Ridelin for his ADHD condition instead of his normal medication and had passed every test. Freeman was released later that week as the Bucs could not find a viable trade partner. He got interest from multiple teams and on October 6th, he signed a one year deal with the Minnesota Vikings. Freeman is going to compete for a starting job with Matt Cassel and Christian Ponder. Ponder started the year as the quarterback but injuries forced him to be replaced by Cassel who won the only game for the Vikings. Ponder is still listed as the starter, but Freeman was brought in to presumable take the starting role in the near future.

Glennon comes to the helm of an underperforming yet talented offense. Against the Arizona Cardinals, Glennon had the Bucs up late but the Cardinals rallied near the end and ended up winning after a key Glennon interception. Head Coach Greg Schiano will use the Buc’s current bye week, and the next week to evaluate Glennon’s play and determine what to improve upon. Glennon has some weapons in his arsenal including star running back Doug Martin, and a pair of very good wide receivers in Mike Williams, and Vincent Jackson. We will see if he is able to right the pirate ship.
