On Thursday, April 7th, popular TV show American Idol aired its last show after being on TV since 2002. The two finalists this year were Trent Harmon and La’Porsha Renae but only one of them would be crowned winner, and that was Trent.

Greatly surprised, Trent tumbled to the stage after hearing his name being announced as the 15th winner of American Idol. “I know that I have a God-given ability, but I didn’t want to take it for granted. I wanted to work so, so hard, and she pushed me to do it,” said Trent while talking about Renae.

“I haven’t been able to breathe in almost a year. I feel like in that moment, I got to decompress for the first time in almost a year,” Harmon said at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.

Due to it being the season finale, the judge’s familiar faces from previous years showed up and performed. Jennifer Lopez performed her new single while Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood sang a duet.

“I think it was a good time for the show to end, I think that more people are watching other shows like The Voice or X Factor and American Idol isn’t as popular anymore,” said Junior, Chase Creasy.

Clips from previous seasons were played throughout the show featuring the original judges, Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. Even Simon said “I’m feeling quite emotional now,” when looking back on old memories.

Over the years, Idol’s ratings have slumped significantly. In 2006 the show reached its peak of 30 million viewers weekly and ranked No.1 for nine consecutive years unlike last season, which only averaged 11 million viewers weekly.

“I thought the show was better when I was younger and I haven’t really watched in a while, I didn’t even know this was the season finale,” said Junior Leslie Henriquez when asked about whether she liked American Idol or not.

American Idol has been a successful show throughout the years and it seems that it is a good time for the show to end, diehard fans are going to miss it.
