NHL All Star Weekend Thrills

On the weekend of January 24th-25th, the 60th NHL All Star game and skills competition took place inside the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.  Team Captains for the event included Jonathan Toews, captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Nick Foligno, member of the Columbus Bluejackets.

The first event to take place was the skills competition Saturday night, where the top players in the NHL gathered to prepare for the All Star game the following night and show off their skills.  This event is typically more entertaining to fans because it puts players in a unique environment to prove which player is best in particular settings.

The two captains picked from a group of the top players from each team around the league to take their best shot at the events.  These events include fastest skater, breakaway challenge, accuracy shooting, skills-challenge relay, hardest shot and a shootout.

Foligno was by far the favorite this competition having the competition take place in his home town.  Nick is amazed seeing the city’s main focus of the weekend revolve around the sport and the competition.

“It’s so great seeing hockey being the main focal point in Columbus the whole weekend,” he said. “It’s pretty impressive.”

Besides showing off the players many talents the event was a great way to bring out the spirit of friendly competition and cut loose with friends around the league.

The next event on Sunday the 25th, was the All Star game.  Team Foligno (home) against Team Toews (away).  During the game many records were set including most goals scored in an All Star game.  Team Toews gained a huge early lead and ran away with it, winning the 2015 NHL All-Star game, 17-12, over Team Foligno.  The 29 combined goals is the most in NHL All-Star Game history.

The competition featured numerous talented players from every team.  But three of the bunch came from The Tampa Bay Lightning.  Steven Stamkos, Tyler Johnson, and Jonathan Drouin all participated in the 2015 All Star Weekend.
