Review of the 86th Annual Academy Awards

The Oscars is the most exclusive and talked about award show on television. This year’s 86th Annual Academy Awards was hosted by Ellen DeGeneres for the second time.  Despite DeGeneres’ joke about Liza Minnelli, DeGeneres did not disappoint us this year. Ellen was very entertaining and interactive with the audience.

“I love Ellen and I was really excited to see her host the Oscars this year. I think she did a great job as a host,” freshman Tiernan Noll said.

As predicted, Disney’s Frozen won Best Feature Film and Meryl Streep was nominated once again for Best Actress, but she didn’t win. On the other hand, it was quite a surprise when Leonardo DiCaprio lost Best Actor to Matthew McConaughey. It was also shocking that Gravity won seven awards.

“I felt bad for him (Leonardo) because everyone thought he was going to win and I think he thought so too. He seemed really disappointed when he lost,” freshman Adam Buzassy said.

In addition, both winners of the Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Jared Leto) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Lupita Nyong’o) gave amazing acceptance speeches. It is always refreshing to hear inspirational and humble words from celebrities.

Many interesting things happened at the award ceremony. Ironically, Jennifer Lawrence fell again at the Academy Awards.  Also, DeGeneres made history when she crashed twitter and broke the record for the most retweets on Twitter.  She posted a memorable selfie that was the highlight of the night. The photo included many A-list celebrities like Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep and Angelina Jolie.

“The Oscar selfie was really cute. Everyone seemed so eager to be in it and it was the first Oscar selfie to ever be taken with that many celebrities,” freshman Megan Clark said.

Overall, the 86th Academy Awards hosted by Ellen DeGeneres was a success once again.
