Congressional Hopeful Has Passed Century Mark

Growing up, we’re taught that we can make a difference. While that difference is generally attempted during young adulthood, one Sarasota man is making his attempt a little later. Joe Newman is running for congress, but the kicker is, he’s doing it at age 101.

Calling himself an “anthropological progressive” Newman is running for Florida’s 16th congressional district, with the hopes of stealing the seat of republican Vern Buchanan.

With a campaign slogan of “real issues, real points, real campaign,” Newman acknowledges that his chances of winning as a write-in candidate are slim.

“There is nothing that can be lost if I can get you and others to think about what the issues are,” Newman said.

Even if Newman was elected, he would not hold the title of oldest member of congress. Elizabeth Hawley Gasque held a congressional seat until her death in 1989 at age 103.

Newman hopes that by running, he will bring light to the issues he has faced throughout his lifetime.

“You learn through life you have certain responsibilities,” Newman told WFLA. “And if you don’t fulfill them, how can you look in the mirror?”
