Iconic Actor Dies

On Feburary 2, 2014 acclaimed actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his Greenwich Village home in New York. A hypodermic needle was allegedly found sticking out of his arm.

Hoffman was an Academy Award winning actor, featured in films such as Almost Famous, Capote, Twister, The Savages, and Moneyball. His most recent film was The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in which he played games keeper Plutarch Heavensbee.

Hoffman was born in Fairport, New York, a suburb in Rochester. His first acting role was on thetelevision show Law & Order, in which he played the defendant in a rape case in the episode entitled “The Violence Of Summer”.

His portrayal of writer Truman Capote in the 2005 film, Capote, earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor, Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Authorities say the cause of Hoffman’s death was an apparent drug overdose. Hoffman has long struggled with addiction. In 2006, during a ’60 Minutes’ interview, he stated he’d given up drugs and drinking several years earlier. Hoffman’s addiction was said to have started in his 20’s. Last year he checked into a rehab program for about 10 days after suffering from an addiction to prescription pills, resulting in a relapse of heroin use.

“I saw him last week, and he was clean and sober, his old self. I really thought this chapter was over,” David Bar Katz, a playwright and friend of Hoffman said.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was 46 years old and leaves behind a wife and three kids.
