Fans of video game franchise Grand Theft Auto are frustrated at the lack of a new sixth installment, despite the success of GTA V.

Released on September 17th, 2013, Grand Theft Auto V is an open world game made by Rockstar Studios. When it released, it garnered plenty of praise from audiences around the world. However, as of writing this, it has been almost 8 years since the 5th part of the popular game series released, and gamers are starting to get more and more impatient and angry. This anger has become more relevant today, mainly due to Rockstar’s announcement for the dates of when GTA V releases on the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles, adding a new surge of relevancy for the topic. Along side the anger, many are simply disappointed and defeated at the situation, and twitter user @scottiscold is one of them. In a tweet he expresses his own lack of surprise at the lack of news. “I noticed GTA 6 was trending, it wasn’t anything important though. As expected, they’re going to milk GTA 5 for all it’s worth.”

The lack of a GTA VI even almost a decade later is especially confusing when the actual success of the previous game is factored into account. Official reports for Rockstar’s sales for video games state that Grand Theft Auto V has sold around 150 million copies and made around $6 billion, making it not only the best selling video game, but also the best-selling general entertainment product. GTA V has become so successful that many have said that a financial phenomenon like it will never happen again. Doug Crewz is one of them- in an interview with magazine Game Informer, he said the following: “That’s not to say Rockstar won’t have other big hits – it may – but another GTA V isn’t likely.”

GTA V has become more than just a popular video game- it has become an established piece of culture. In schools, those from elementary school all the way to college talk about it. Mainstream rappers like Playboi Carti and Lil Uzi Vert reference it in their music. Parents often debate about if their children should be playing it. Which is why that to the people, it’s especially frustrating that despite all this success, Rockstar Games have not capitalized on it by making a main game in the franchise. It has become more of an utter joke at this point. Twitter user @whitestferrari makes one of these many comedic criticisms of the wait. “When I see GTA 6 trending for the 56th time and still no actual updates.”

The wait for the newest adventure in crime is starting to seem as overly absurd to the people who are most excited for it. Many would consider it that demands have reached a point where Rockstar Games might have their hand forced to act. Whether or not they will address the concerns is entirely up to them, and the whole world is watching to see if they do.
