Are Strict Dress Codes necessary?

Dress code is a set of rules, usually written and posted, specifying the required manner of dress at a school, office, club, restaurant, etc. Dress codes at school are usually implemented to promote learning and safety.  However, dress codes may be actually doing more harm than good, from targeting and harming girls, to violating freedoms of religious expression.

Schools dress codes enact quite a handful of rules. For example, spaghetti strip tank tops, sagging pants, crop tops, leggings, bandanas, etc. are not allowed. However, are some of these rules necessary for keeping the school environment a safe learning environment? For example, dress coding girls over tank tops should not be vital because the only skin that is being exposed are shoulders, however, schools find that to be a very big deal and it’s an inappropriate way to dress.

In addition to dress codes being strict, they may also be controversial for some people because some might think that these rules are mainly only enforced on girls. School administrations seem to think that instead of correcting male students (and even teachers) perverted behavior, restricting girls’ freedom of expression is the better option. There are also dress code rules for boys, but they are rarely enforced. An example of this would be that even though boys sagging their pants is against the rules, there are still a great number of boys that still sag their pants and nothing is done about that. On the other hand, if a girl is wearing a shirt that is showing “too much stomach,” then it is considered unacceptable and they are more likely than not, dress coded. Obviously, a great deal of female students find this to be particularly odd and unfair, which is understandable since dress codes tend to only affect them.
