The long anticipated video game Grand Theft Auto V finally came out on September 18, 2013. The game is available for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. Since 2010, when Grand Theft Auto IV came out, the game has reached a total of 3,522,206 pre-orders according to VGChartz. Rockstar, the creating company, made more money before it came out than it costed to make the actual game. It is priced at retail for about fifty-five dollars. There is a rumor flying around that Rockstar is coming out with a PC version on November 22, 2013, valued at thirty-nine dollars. Within the first day of release the sales reached an increasing $800 million, and by the third day sales hit $1 billion. Grand Theft Auto V broke the previous sale record of $310 million, held by Grand Theft Auto IV, becoming the ‘fastest selling entertainment product ever.’

“I had a great deal of fun with Grand Theft Auto V,” sophomore Tom Camillo said. “It’s an amazing open world with over 101 things to do with your own way to do them.”

The game is so wildly popular that there have been bizarre reports about people attempting to steal it. In London, a man was stabbed and robbed of his copy. Young Staten Island men also dress up as officers in the mall in order to skip the waiting line to purchase the game, according to New York Daily News.

People are curious as to what makes the game so interesting. Rockstar worked to achieve the narrative structure of movies, TV shows, or books by presenting multiple points of view. This defining feature makes the game seem more realistic and also makes the game feel like the series is moving forward in some way other than simply getting bigger. You can switch between the three protagonists within the game instead of only one static character.  You are able to switch between a retired bank robber, Michael, an up-and-coming gangster, Franklin, and a lunatic meth mastermind, Trevor. Each of the characters has completely different stories and unique skill sets but they all interact in a way.

Though there is a controversial attribute about it, this is a game that screen-addicts adore. Booming sales and unpredictable thefts prove that Rockstar did something right. There are already ideas for Grand Theft Auto VI and the world can’t wait to see what Rockstar comes up with next.
