Red tide is a current phenomenon that is killing off marine animals. It is caused by buildup of algae and pollution and began affecting only Southwestern Florida in places like Fort Myers and Sarasota but has recently been found in the Tampa Bay area, as well as on the Atlantic coast.

The Red Tide algae blooms have changed the water in Ft. Myers from beautiful, to yuck.

Fish, manatees, and even dolphins and a whale shark have been found dead on shores across Florida. The algae can also harm the seafood and shellfish, which can be toxic for human consumption.

Animals aren’t the only living organisms at risk. If people get too close it can cause upper respiratory infections and it is advised that people with chronic respiratory issues (like asthma and emphysema) stay away from the water.

“Most people don’t know that once red tide starts because of one source, other sources add to it, like runoff and pollution,” said Shelby Adum, Maine Science teacher at Freedom High School.

“We can’t just make it go away, it has to run its course.”
