On Friday, Jan. 13, the Tampa Bay Lightning hosted a special event. The 25-year-old organization chose Martin St. Louis, “Marty,” to become the first player in the organization’s history to have his number, 26, retired.

Marty was honored on a special night, when the Lightning played the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Head Coach of the Blue Jackets, John Tortorella, is well known for formerly coaching the Lightning and St. Louis to Tampa’s only Stanley Cup.

Tortorella shared a few words of appreciation for Marty. Other speakers included NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman, Lightning Head Coach Jon Cooper and Lightning Captain Steven Stamkos.

Following the speakers, a banner displaying St. Louis’ name and number was displayed from the rafters for all to see.

Many Freedom Patriots hold the Lightning organization dearly. Several Pats attended the once in a lifetime experience. One such student was Andrew Wise, 11.

Wise explained, “[The best part was] how inspiring it was because it was really cool to be in someone’s presence that impacted the city of Tampa so much.”

Wise enjoys going to games because he appreciates the atmosphere and enjoys spending time there with his friends.

“It’s a real electrifying experience,” stated Wise.

Another Patriot, Lindsay Strickland, 12, shared her experience.

“What I liked most about the ceremony was listening to the inspiring story of Marty’s career,” noted Strickland.

Strickland attends games to support the team and enjoy the exciting atmosphere.

Though some Pats missed the opportunity to witness history, there will be more Lightning games at Amalie Arena for the next few months.
