You have it, your friends have it, your teachers have it, maybe even your parents have it–social media. As use of social media grows, so do people’s need for online popularity. Some are even willing to spend money to gain fake ‘likes’ and ‘followers’. What is the point?

It’s really not worth it.

Originally, social media was a way to communicate with your close friends and acquaintances. However, if you currently scroll through your timeline, you’ll be bombarded with photoshopped waists and sponsored posts from barely-famous celebrities. It’s difficult to distinguish reality from fantasy. Besides, who has time to filter through all the ads and annoying posts?

The Kardashians have managed to make millions off of social media. Kim K would be nothing without social media. The Kardashian family is living proof that it is possible to rise to fame through Instagram and Snapchat, you just have to make a sex tape first.

I only see this social media epidemic growing as our generation becomes more and more obsessed with attention, but I certainly won’t be deleting my accounts any time soon.
