FLVS Classes Gain Favor With FHS Students

Florida Virtual School (FLVS) is something most high school students tend to have a love-hate relationship with. FLVS provides a way for students to increase their grade point average, recover credits from a class they have failed, or simply explore courses not offered on campus.

While FLVS courses are not for everyone, taking at least one online class is a graduation requirement, therefore every student must request at least one within their four years of high school.

“Requests go through our guidance counselors to see if our Freedom students are on track. They make sure the class the student requests will help them graduate, and it’s not too difficult for them to complete,” said Matthew Smith, Assistant Principal for Curriculum.

“The most requested courses I get are social media, peer counseling, outdoor education and HOPE [physical education],” Guidance Counselor Jennifer Adams noted.

Sophomore Amir Iranmanesh has taken over fifteen Florida Virtual School classes.

Iranmanesh takes mostly elective classes online, but he has also taken core classes such as English II and Pre-Calculus. He offered some advice for students who struggle taking online classes.

“Make sure to spend at least twenty minutes every day on each class, right when you get home. That’s the easiest thing for me. Also, don’t sit near your phone if you’re easily distracted,” said Iranmanesh. “Just make time for it, don’t slack or else you’ll never be able to catch up.”
