Cheerios Fail

Freedom Patriots that are allergic to gluten, this is a story for you. Cheerios, a General Mills brand, has had to recall over 1.8 million boxes of gluten-free Cheerios and gluten-free Honey Nut Cheerios because they may contain gluten.

It was reported Monday that boxes produced at General Mills’ Lodi, California facility, with the better if used by date of July 12th 2016 – July 25th 2016, may cause illness or severe allergic reactions in people who are allergic to wheat, have celiac disease, or have a gluten intolerance.

“When I eat gluten I break out into hives and I get really bad stomach cramps,” explained Matthew Byram, a Freedom graduate. “People have worse reactions than me when they eat wheat and gluten. So, having something that says gluten-free and it turns out to have gluten in it can kill people.”

An uncommon allergic reaction that can occur in some people after they ingest gluten and/or wheat is Anaphylaxis. It’s a life-threatening reaction that can send the body into shock and affect a person’s breathing.

The FDA reported that several people became ill after eating the gluten-free Cheerios. The company enacted the recall voluntarily.

“Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios cereals produced at General Mills’ other facilities, or on dates other than those noted at the Lodi, California facility, are not impacted,” General Mills stated in its press release about the recall. Other Cheerios brands that are gluten-free are not affected by the recall and can continue to be eaten by gluten and wheat haters all around the United States.

The recall comes just a couple weeks after Cheerios released several commercials and ads about its addition of gluten-free cereals.
