Social Media Can Lead to Depression

Is social media leading people into depression? It has been proven that networking such as Facebook can cause depression. Depression to me is a feeling that is caused by the society we live in. We are all expected to look a certain way or else we are treated differently.
“In Sweden, researchers at the University of Gothburg studied 1,011 people and found results showed that Facebook usage had a significant negative relationship with self-esteem” said Rebecca Savastio of Liberty Voice.
This problem is evident in all people, but mostly in females. Magazines and pages online show certain ways females should look: skinny, girlie, long hair, tons of makeup, and in the most expensive and newest clothes. I think that it is horrible and wrong. It makes people become narcissistic, and try to become the ideal person. The feeling of not being accepted by your peers or social circle can cause someone to feel unwanted, unloved, lonely or depressed.
“…It’s all essentially a fantasy land and I think this has a bigger effect on all people … It can cause things like anxiety and depression probably on a larger scale that any drug has ever caused in America” said psychiatrist Dr. Michael Yasinki.
Teens today spend more time on the internet inside and at home with complete strangers they’ve never met before, then real friend outside and offline. It has seemingly become more important to have your phone with you than to know how get your way around town.
“…Interaction these teens have on social networking sites is on the rise with 22% of teenagers logging onto their favorite social networking’s sites is more than 10 times a day “ said a source from Parenting.com
I think it has become apparent, that today’s society has taken a turn for the worst. There are great media sources and awesome ways to stay in touch, but, if you’re not the world’s ideal person, then you are cast aside and forgotten about.
