Humanity Hits A Home-Run

Sporting competition usually reaches its height at the collegiate level, but two softball players from Florida Southern College put their competitive instincts aside and helped an injured player on the opposing team obtain the victory.

In their final game, Eckerd College needed a win to secure their first ever winning record season. Eckerd sophomore Kara Oberer reached the plate, and nailed what would become a 3-run home run. But on her way to first base, she felt her knee give out, and Eckerd’s chances of victory go along with it.

“It locked up as I started going down to first base and then I started hopping on one leg to try to get there,” Oberer said.

Without thinking, Florida Southern Pitcher Chelsea Oglevie, with the help of her Second Baseman Leah Pemberton, carried their opponent around the field, stopping to make sure she touched all of the bases.

“In the moment it just seemed natural,” Oglevie added. “If somebody’s hurt, you need to help them, and she deserved that home run.”

In the last pitch of her college career, Oglevie never stopped to think about how her actions would affect her team’s score.

“[She] was absolutely sobbing,” Oglevie said. “She literally couldn’t put one foot in front of the other. I was like, ‘there’s no way this girl isn’t gonna make it home’.”

The true selflessness in the actions of Florida Southern gave Eckerd their winning season, but will be remembered for another reason.

“I’ll remember those girls probably the rest of my life,” Oberer said.
